Halaal Spit Braai Catering, Cape Town
Book a halaal spit braai in Cape Town at R150 per person for lamb or R116 for chicken, no surcharge: a dedicated spit, trays and utensils that have never carried pork, a separate prep, and no wine or pork derivatives anywhere on the menu. We are not a certified halaal caterer and will not tell you otherwise — whether what we control meets your requirement is your call, not ours.

Halaal spit braai, and why we say halaal-friendly
If you are looking for a halaal spit braai in Cape Town, that is the first thing worth saying, because plenty of caterers advertising a halaal spit braai imply otherwise. Spit Braai Pro holds no certification from SANHA, the Muslim Judicial Council, NIHT or any other authority. Whether a meal is halaal is a religious determination, and it is not one a caterer gets to make on your behalf.
What we can do is tell you exactly how we handle it, name the supplier, and let you decide. For a great many customers that is enough. For some it will not be, and if your family or your community requires certified catering you should book a certified caterer — we would rather say so now than have you find out on the day.
What makes a spit braai halaal: the five links
Halaal is a chain, not an ingredient. Buying halaal meat is necessary and nowhere near sufficient: every link from the abattoir to the carving board has to hold, and most of the failures happen well after the butcher.
1. The slaughter
The animal is slaughtered according to Islamic requirements by a certified halaal abattoir. This is the link everyone knows about, and the easiest one to verify — ask for the certificate.
2. The equipment
A spit that has roasted pork is not made halaal by washing. The spit itself, the rod and forks, trays, tongs, knives and boards are kept for halaal use only. This is the link most often quietly skipped, because it costs the caterer a second set of everything.
3. The preparation
Halaal meat prepped in the same session, on the same surfaces, as a non-halaal booking is contaminated. It needs a separate prep, not a careful one.
4. The marinade and the sides
Wine in the marinade is the classic slip. So is pork-derived gelatine, shared frying oil, and bacon in a side salad nobody thought about. Every component gets checked, not only the meat.
5. The service
At a mixed event, one carving station serving halaal and non-halaal meat undoes the four links before it. It needs two stations, two sets of utensils and clear separation.
What we actually control
A lot of caterers will tell you they "can do halaal" and mean they buy halaal meat. That is one link in the chain above, and the other four are where it usually breaks. Here is how each link is handled on our bookings, and whose word you are taking for it:
| Link | What we do | Whose word you are taking |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | A dedicated spit, trays, boards and utensils kept for these bookings only. They have never carried pork | Ours |
| Preparation | Prepped in a separate session, never alongside a non-halaal booking | Ours |
| Marinade & sides | No wine, no pork derivatives, no shared oil, no bacon in anything | Ours |
| Transport & service | Kept separate end to end, including a separate carving station | Ours |
| The meat | Bought from a halaal butcher. We will name the supplier and pass on whatever documentation they issue | The butcher's, not ours |
That last row is the honest one. The meat carries the butcher's assurance, not a Spit Braai Pro certificate, and we will hand you their paperwork so you can check it against whichever authority you follow rather than take our word for it.
If you are booking for a mixed event where some guests require halaal and others don't, say so up front. We run that as two separate spits with two sets of equipment — never one spit and a promise.
Halaal-friendly spit braai prices
Halaal-friendly lamb is R150 per person and chicken R116, from 25 guests — the same rates as every other spit we cook. Halaal sourcing and a second set of equipment are absorbed into the price, not billed on top of it. Fifty guests on lamb is R7 500; a hundred is R15 000.
| Booking | Rate | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Halaal-friendly lamb spit | R150 per person | Whole lamb from a halaal butcher, the chef, dedicated equipment, garlic roast potatoes, fresh rolls, chafing trays, carving, set-up and clean-up |
| Halaal-friendly chicken spit | R116 per person | Same service — usually the choice above about 120 guests |
| Mixed meat, two spits | R204 per person | Lamb plus chicken on two spits, two sets of equipment, two carving stations |
| Salads, extra staff, travel | On top | Salads from R15 a head, extra service staff R850 each, travel free within 30km |
| The butcher's paperwork | No charge | Whatever documentation our supplier issues for the meat, handed to you with the quote. It is theirs, not ours |
There is no halaal surcharge and no charge to quote. The full breakdown of what moves a price is on spit braai prices.
Halaal spit braai menu
Lamb and chicken are the halaal options. Whole halaal lamb over coals is the same cook and the same chef service as our standard lamb spit — the difference is entirely in sourcing and separation, not in quality or method.
| Course | Halaal menu |
|---|---|
| Meat | Whole lamb from a halaal butcher, or halaal chicken for larger headcounts |
| Sides — choose two | Roast potatoes, rice, roasted vegetables, green salad, potato salad, curried noodle salad, three-bean salad |
| Bread | Fresh rolls, baked the same day |
| Sauces | Monkey-gland, mint, chilli — all made without wine or pork derivatives |
| Not served | No pork, no bacon, no alcohol in any marinade, sauce or side |
The full side list and the add-ons are on the spit braai menu.
Halaal-friendly caterers, and how to check one
Most people looking for halaal caterers in Cape Town are trying to answer one question about a stranger: can I serve this to my family. The useful checks are the same whoever you ask, and none of them is the word "halaal" on a website.
| Ask them this | What a straight answer sounds like |
|---|---|
| Are you certified, and by whom? | A body is named — SANHA, the MJC, NIHT, ICSA — or the answer is a plain no. Ours is a plain no. |
| Is the equipment dedicated? | A second spit, second trays, second boards, kept apart. Washing a pork spit is not an answer |
| Who is the butcher? | A name you can phone, and their paperwork handed over |
| What is in the marinade? | Wine is the standard slip. So is pork gelatine and shared frying oil |
| How do you run a mixed event? | Two spits and two stations, or they have not thought about it |
A caterer who answers those five without hedging is worth more than one with the word halaal in their domain name. Ask us the same five and see the answers above.
Buffet service and larger functions
Most halaal-friendly bookings we cook are buffet-style rather than plated, because the headcounts are bigger — a nikah, an engagement, a family function or a hall booking runs to numbers a seated service cannot handle comfortably. The chafing trays that hold the food hot, the serving utensils, the gazebo and the carving station are inside the per-head rate; cutlery and crockery are R15–R25 a head if the venue does not supply them.
For a mixed event that means two of everything, which needs standing room rather than a garden — which is why the larger ones end up in a hall or a club. Two spits and two carving stations is the only honest way to run it; one spit serving both undoes every other precaution.
Everything else about how a booking runs — the cook, the carving, the clear-up — is the same as our standard spit braai catering in Cape Town.
Where we cater halaal in Cape Town
Across greater Cape Town, and halaal bookings are the reason we carry a second set of everything. The areas we cook halaal in most often are Rylands, Athlone, Surrey Estate, Gatesville, Crawford and Lansdowne; Bo-Kaap, Walmer Estate and Salt River on the city side; Grassy Park, Lotus River and Ottery to the south; and Bellville South, Belhar and Parow in the north. Travel is free within 30km of Durbanville and priced on the quote beyond that.
- the Cape Flats and Metro South-East — where most of our 150-plus mixed-event headcounts are booked, usually in a hall or a club
- Spit braai in the Northern Suburbs — Bellville South, Belhar and Parow are short runs from our Durbanville base
- Spit braai in the Southern Suburbs — Lansdowne, Crawford and Wynberg, where access is often the constraint
Halaal questions
Are you halaal certified?
No. Spit Braai Pro holds no certification from SANHA, the Muslim Judicial Council, NIHT or any other body, and we do not present the meal we serve as certified. We run dedicated equipment, a separate prep and a halaal butcher, and we hand you the butcher's paperwork so you can make the determination yourself.
How much does a halaal-friendly spit braai cost?
R150 per person for lamb, R116 for chicken and R204 for a mixed spit — the same rates as any other booking. Halaal sourcing and a second set of equipment carry no surcharge.
Can you provide paperwork for the meat?
Yes. We will name the butcher and pass on whatever certificate or documentation they issue for the meat used at your event. That document is the butcher's assurance about the meat, not a certification of our kitchen or our service.
Is the equipment genuinely separate?
Yes — a dedicated spit, trays and utensils kept for halaal bookings only. This is the part most caterers skip, because it costs a second set of everything. Ask any caterer not whether the meat is halaal but whether the equipment is dedicated; the answer sorts them quickly.
Do you cater halaal weddings?
Yes, regularly. See wedding spit braai catering and mention halaal when you enquire.
Can you cater a mixed halaal and non-halaal event?
Yes, as two separate spits with two sets of equipment and two carving stations. One spit serving both is not halaal, and we will not run it that way.
How many people does a halaal lamb spit feed?
A whole halaal lamb feeds 35 to 45 guests as the main protein. Above that we run a second spit, or move to halaal chicken at R116 a head.
