Braai Day & Heritage Day Spit Braai

Heritage Day 2026 falls on Thursday 24 September, so a good part of Cape Town takes the Friday and turns it into a four-day weekend - which means the good dates go early. A chef-run whole lamb, pork or chicken is R180 a head with no public-holiday surcharge, and the practical cut-off for a whole lamb is the first week of September.

Heritage Day 2026 is Thursday 24 September

It falls on a Thursday, which means a good part of Cape Town takes the Friday and turns it into a four-day weekend. That matters twice over: the good dates go early, and a Thursday braai runs later than a Saturday one because nobody has to be up.

National Braai Day and Heritage Day are the same public holiday. The braai framing was added on top of the heritage one, which is why the same 24 September carries both names. Either way it is the busiest braai date on the South African calendar, and the one day of the year when the meat is not a side issue.

Booking window. A whole lamb wants two to three weeks’ notice, so the practical cut-off for 2026 is the first week of September. After that it comes down to whether a chef is still free on the day.

What a Braai Day spit braai costs

R180 per person, the same as any other day — there is no public-holiday surcharge. That covers the chef for the full cook, the spit, the coals, the meat, two sides, rolls, carving, and taking everything away afterwards.

Why hand Braai Day to somebody else

There is an obvious objection: the whole point of Braai Day is that you braai. Fair. But a whole lamb on a spit is not a braai in that sense — it is a five to seven hour job that starts before breakfast and will not let you leave the fire. Doing it yourself means spending the one day built for standing around with people not standing around with people.

The compromise most of our Heritage Day customers land on: the chef runs the spit, and the host still puts a grid of boerewors and chops on alongside it. Everybody gets to braai, and the part that takes seven hours is somebody else’s problem.

Company Braai Day functions

Heritage Day is the one team event of the year that needs no theme, no ice-breaker and no venue with a projector. A spit on the lawn or in the car park does the whole job. We invoice properly, quote a firm per-head figure and plan the dietary list in advance — see corporate and year-end functions. If the date has already gone, the same setup runs the year-end function six weeks later.

Braai Day questions

When is National Braai Day 2026?

Thursday 24 September 2026. It is the same date as Heritage Day, which is a South African public holiday — National Braai Day is the braai-shaped name for it, not a separate day.

How late can I book a spit braai for Heritage Day?

Do you charge more on a public holiday?

No. R180 per person on Heritage Day is R180 per person on any other day.

How much meat do I need for a Braai Day gathering?

Allow 350 to 400g of raw whole lamb per adult — a 20kg lamb feeds about 45 people with two sides and rolls. What each meat feeds is set out on whole lamb, pork and chicken on the spit.

Can I hire just the spit for Braai Day?

Yes, and on Heritage Day plenty of people do. Spit braai hire starts at R650 a day for a charcoal spit, delivered and collected, and you do the cooking — that page lays the two options out side by side.
