Spit Braai Catering, Helderberg

Somerset West, Strand and Gordon's Bay - where the south-easter coming off Sir Lowry's Pass is the variable that actually decides how the day goes. A spit fire in an exposed Helderberg garden needs shelter and extra time built in, not optimism. R180 a head, chef on site, travel included.

Spit braai catering in the Helderberg

Somerset West, Strand and Gordon's Bay sit in their own pocket of the Cape, and the catering job there has more in common with a coastal booking than a Winelands one — wind first, everything else second.

The Sir Lowry's Pass wind

The Helderberg basin funnels the south-easter down off the pass and across the flats toward Gordon's Bay, and in summer it is the defining variable for anything cooked outdoors there. It is stronger and more consistent than in the Northern Suburbs, and it arrives in the afternoon — which is exactly when a spit is at its most heat-sensitive.

What that means in practice: on an exposed Helderberg site we set up with a wind break as standard rather than as a contingency, and we position the spit so the prevailing wind works with the coals instead of stripping heat off them. It is a solved problem, but only if we know the site is exposed before we arrive.

Two kinds of Helderberg booking

Estate and venue events

The Helderberg has its own cluster of wine and function venues on the mountain slopes. Sheltered, generally well set up for outdoor catering, and the easiest version of the job.

Coastal and residential

Strand and Gordon's Bay gardens, closer to the water and more exposed. Very doable — just tell us the site is open when you enquire.

Travel included. Standard R180 per person — see packages and prices, and the menu itself is on the spit braai menu. Somerset West wedding bookings are on wedding catering.

Every area we cook in

If your suburb or estate is on this list, travel is included and the rate is the same R180 a head. The Helderberg has more estates than anywhere else we cover, so check that section too.

Places people mix up

Strand, Gordon’s Bay, Macassar, Lwandle and Nomzamo are not Somerset West suburbs. They are separate Helderberg towns and townships, and they get lumped together constantly. We cover all of them — but if a caterer quotes you “Somerset West” for a Strand address, check what travel they have costed.

Suburbs and neighbourhoods

Level ground out of the worst of the south-easter, which off Sir Lowry's Pass is the variable that actually decides the day.

Estates, golf and country villages

The Helderberg has more security and golf estates than anywhere else we cover. Gate access, a vehicle list and the estate's fire rules are settled before you book.

Business parks and industrial areas

Business-park and precinct functions, with loading access and after-hours arranged in advance.

Smallholdings, farms and rural addresses

Travel confirmed on the quote, and we check water and a level, sheltered standing area.

Helderberg questions

Is the wind actually a problem for a spit braai?

Yes — it is the main one, and more so here than most of the Cape. It does not cancel a cook — it means the setup has to account for it, which is a planning question rather than a weather gamble.

Do you cater in Gordon's Bay?

Yes, travel included. Coastal sites are usually the most exposed, so mention it when you enquire.

How far ahead should I book a summer Helderberg date?

Six weeks or more for a summer Saturday. The Helderberg venue calendar fills at the same rate as the Winelands.
