Spit Braai Catering, Southern Suburbs
Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Constantia, Tokai and the old southern line. Big mature gardens, which is the easy part, and narrow side access with a low oak canopy over the fire, which is the part worth planning. R180 a head with the chef on site for the full cook.

Spit braai catering across the Southern Suburbs
Rondebosch, Newlands, Claremont, Constantia, Tokai and the rest of the old southern line. These are mature properties with big gardens, which is the easiest version of this job — and awkward access, which is the hard part.
What actually decides a Southern Suburbs booking
Getting the equipment to the back garden
A great many Rondebosch, Newlands and Claremont houses have a narrow side passage and no vehicle access to the rear. The spit, the frame and a bag of coals then get carried through, which is fine if we know beforehand and slow if we do not. Tell us on the quote whether a vehicle can reach the spot, and we plan the arrival time around it.
Oaks, and what sits above the fire
The old oak and plane cover through Newlands, Claremont and Bishopscourt is lovely and it is also a low canopy over an open fire. We site the spit clear of overhanging branches rather than under them — on some properties that decides where it stands more than anything else.
Winter, not wind
The south-easter breaks over the mountain before it reaches most of this side, so wind is rarely the problem here. Rain is. From about May to September we want a covered standing area for the chef, or a marquee corner, and the cook runs to time regardless.
What we need on site
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| About three metres square, level, on ground rather than a wooden deck | The spit and the fire stand there for five to seven hours |
| Vehicle access within carrying distance | The frame, motor and coals come off the vehicle |
| Somewhere to stand the vehicle during the cook | The equipment stays on site all day |
| A tap | Cleaning down. No power is needed — the spit runs on coals and its own gas |
Work out what your spit braai costs
R9 00050 guests × R180 a head, all in — chef, equipment, cooking, carving and clear-up included.
An estimate, not a quote — travel beyond about 60km and extra sides are quoted separately. Nothing is sent until you tap through.
Every area we cook in
If your suburb or estate is on this list, travel is included and the rate is the same R180 a head. The thing to tell us is whether a vehicle can reach the back garden.
Places people mix up
Retreat, Steenberg and Grassy Park sit on the Cape Flats side of the line and are often mis-filed as Southern Suburbs. Constantia, Bishopscourt and Tokai are three separate areas rather than one “Constantia valley”.
Nothing matches that. We may still cover it — send us the address and we will tell you straight away.

Southern Suburbs questions
Can you get a spit into a back garden with no vehicle access?
Yes — the equipment comes apart and is carried through. Say so when you book so we allow the extra time; it is the single most common surprise on this side of town.
Do you cater in Constantia and Bishopscourt?
Yes, and both are inside the included travel band. Larger Constantia properties often want the carving station away from the house, which suits a spit well.
What happens if it rains?
The cook carries on. What we need is a covered spot for the chef and the carving board — a carport, a marquee edge or a patio does it. The chef plans the setup around it on arrival; see what your spit braai chef does.
